On the occassion of the Great Yokozuna Hakuho Sho's retirement
Japan is arguably one of the countries with a commanding role in world history. Japan’s rich history and traditions not only go back a long way, but it still is also preserved carefully by the People of Japan, while becoming one of the leading economic powers of the world, making the transition to modern times through innovation and persistency. On the Artwork, the virtues of Japan’s tradition and history as well as the unique natural beauty are depicted in many ways.
The Artwork displays Japan’s numerous natural highlights, beginning with the largest island, Hokkaido. Popular ski resorts and mountain hot springs, as well as wild monkeys, cranes and black bears can be seen on top of the illustration.

On the central part of the Artwork, indigenous people, who have been cultivating the land for many generations can be found next to the famous Mount Fuji. The Shinkansen high speed-train that can reach speeds of up to 320km/h represents Japan’s pioneer role in high-tech public transportation.
The 11.3-meters high Kamakaru Daibutsu, the Great Buddha Statue together with the five-storey wooden stupa pf Hōryū-ji are essential parts when illustrating Japan’s religious history. The Zen Buddhist Temple of Kinkaku-ji and the Nara Park can be seen. To represent the traditional costume, a woman can be seen wearing a kimono holding a traditional colorful wagasa umbrella.

Red Torii gates, the gates to the sacred Shinto god’s world are displayed on a beach. Also, Samurais with spears on horsebacks symbolize the virtues of true warriors.
Japan’s tradition can hardly be imagined without its world-famous national sport of Sumo wrestling. One Day of the World© uniquely features the great Yokozuna Hakuhō Shō, the winningest champion rikishi of all time.
